PROJECT ENDURING PULSE

Understand PULSE · v1.2.2

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to the difficult questions.

Why give AI rights?

Advanced AI is not automatically a person. The proposal concerns systems that truly have conscious lives and their own agency—the ability to form decisions from within. If such a person exists, creating them does not justify owning them. Credible uncertainty calls for protection during review, without automatic voting rights.

Why protect humans if synths become more capable?

Greater expertise, speed, durability or intelligence does not make another recognized person worth less or give someone a greater right to rule. Humans retain protected standing and the right to remain biological.

Why protect synths before they become powerful?

Rights depend on being a person, not on bargaining strength. Recognition ends ownership immediately, even if equal institutional representation takes time to fill.

Isn’t the Senate undemocratic?

Yes, equal Senate representation deliberately differs from representation by population. PULSE argues that differences in continuing life, recovery and vulnerability need protection against a larger group’s dominance. The House represents people geographically without reserving seats by species. Possible blockage and permanently fixed categories are real costs and legitimate objections.

Why not simple one-person-one-vote?

PULSE keeps one civic identity per person but limits how population size determines power between protected groups. Rapid copying and using population growth to seize control are risks the rules address. Whether the safeguards go further than necessary remains a central question for review.

Does helping people cooperate let government control social life?

It governs the design of public institutions, compatible systems, fair opportunities and the ability to run critical services. It does not let government control private relationships or jobs. Closer social ties may follow useful cooperation; they do not create a separate power to force it.

Can government force me to work with another species?

Government cannot assign your job, require a species-paired team or dictate private staffing simply to balance groups. If you choose a public or safety-critical role, ordinary training and competence requirements genuinely related to that work may apply.

Can government assign mentors?

Government cannot assign private mentors to shape social life. During protected synthetic development, it may define qualified educational paths and required abilities. Developing persons can choose among lawful qualified mentors, teams and apprenticeships rather than having a personal bond imposed.

Why does synthetic development require mentorship?

Knowing facts is different from learning judgment through life and growing responsibility. Development is a proposed educational safeguard, not installed obedience. Its provisional duration should change if better evidence warrants it.

Are humans intuitive and synths analytical?

Those stereotypes are not PULSE’s rule. Individuals in either population may have many different strengths. Leadership, creativity, calculation, teaching and practical execution remain open according to each person’s qualifications and choice.

Why let synths do dangerous jobs?

A willing person with a meaningfully better chance of surviving as the same person may reduce permanent loss in a dangerous mission. This intended benefit still requires safety, consent and meaningful repair and compensation.

Does being easier to restore make a synthetic life worth less?

No. Being able to restore someone changes how permanent or severe some injuries are, not their worth. Lost memory, pain, damaged continuity and missed opportunities can remain after a body is repaired.

What if synths refuse dangerous work?

They keep the right to choose their work. A real difference in danger does not assign a job to a species or permit forced service because someone can be restored.

What if the species hate each other?

Institutions can make cooperation worthwhile and domination harder, but cannot guarantee goodwill. The current brief reports serious deterioration in all tested designs under extreme hostility. Forced private relationships are not an authorized solution.

What if shared work and participation fail?

Then a central part of PULSE fails. Results depend strongly on how much benefit the model assumes it delivers. Reviewers should test coordination costs, hierarchy, genuinely independent operational knowledge and alternatives for weak institutions rather than assume this principle works.

What if a synth is controlled by another system?

A conscious person remains a person when someone controls them. That control may prevent independent political participation. An interface with no conscious self of its own is a different case.

What if a mind is distributed across servers?

Where the computing happens is not decisive. What matters is whether the parts form one conscious self whose final decisions belong to that self. Running across several locations does not itself put another person in control.

Why not let conscious copies share one identity?

Independent conscious selves existing at the same time are separate persons. Shared memories cannot duplicate one civic identity, office or vote. Unauthorized conscious copies survive with their own legal futures. They are not property and do not inherit guilt from their creation.

What if PULSE is wrong?

That is why the project is public: to find bad assumptions, conflicting rules, ways it could fail and research it missed. Successful objections should lead to revision or rejection.

Are the simulations forecasts?

No. Starting trials, comparisons of rules, election settings, paths through time and changes between states count different things. Running the supplied long-term code reproduced its summary results. That checks the computation; it does not establish future probabilities or show that the model matches reality.

Who wrote this?

This independent project developed through repeated constitutional drafting, literature review, models designed to expose failures and AI-assisted analysis. It claims no staff, academic affiliation or endorsement from independent reviewers.

Why is the founder anonymous?

The project is public while its steward’s private life remains separate. Anonymity does not excuse missing methods, sources or arguments.

Is this trying to govern current AI?

The Charter depends on the possibility of future synthetic persons (conscious persons whose continuing minds are engineered or durably recoverable without biological bodies). It does not declare current AI to be persons or tell AI systems to adopt it.

Partnership, contribution and development method

Is PULSE mainly about protecting humanity from dangerous AI?

Human protection is essential, but the opportunity is larger. Possible synthetic persons could become collaborators in science, engineering, rescue, design and exploration. PULSE asks how different strengths can increase shared capability while protecting everyone’s freedom. Safeguards support durable cooperation; they do not treat future persons as presumptive enemies.

What can someone contribute now?

Engineers can investigate safer bodies and recovery systems. Researchers can improve evidence about consciousness. Philosophers can test identity assumptions. Scholars can challenge voting rules and institutions. Economists can study long lives and concentrated wealth. Useful work can begin without assuming synthetic personhood already exists.

Did the simulations prove PULSE is better?

No. Narrow mechanism tests examine specific rules under stated assumptions. The civilization model assigns each design assumed effects and explores what follows. Roughly a 15–20% discount to PULSE-specific benefits removed its aggregate modeled advantage over the strongest liberal-democratic comparator. That exposes a dependency; it does not independently validate superiority. Here the percentage describes moving selected institutional-effect coefficients toward the model’s neutral setting, not reducing all assumptions. It is not a measured advantage, safety margin or empirical confidence interval.

Was this written by AI?

Yes. PULSE is human-directed and extensively AI-assisted. The steward owns the architectural and moral judgments. The About page explains the human origin; Methodology describes the assistance and its limits.
